Social Media presence

Here are some of our social media accounts as far as I know.

Centralised and Propreitary

Open and Decentralised

Its really sad that the centralised networks are getting more and more posts compared to the decentralised and open one :unamused: . Please add your comments and suggestions on how we can improve the situation.

Truly the Decentralised one are not that Popular

At first I was resistant to the idea that an organization advocating free software uses centralized proprietary services to spread their message. But after using Mastodon for a while, I realized that people there are already free software users and developers. It will be like preaching to the choir. The ones who need convincing are on proprietary platforms. That said, we should primarily post on decentralized free software services and only cross-post them to the services with the biggest audiences for visibility.

It’s time to start using a cross-poster to post to both Twitter and Mastodon.

Twitter used to block those cross posters. See if anything works today and please suggest it here.

@pavi Seems like self-hosted cross-posters still work but not public ones.

Refer to this thread.

So self hosting a cross poster is the way to go. Its obviously a good idea to even host the cross poster ourself. :+1:

The problem with a cross-poster is that it encourages people to stay on Twitter and give no incentive to move to using their Fediverse account as primary. But that’s better than people not posting to Fediverse at all. It will be harder for us to convince people to join fsmi.social if all the main accounts of FSMI itself are on Twitter. Cross-posted toots will still carry their Twitter references. Another (even worse) option is setting up bots to mirror the accounts. In both cases, the audience on the Fediverse have no way of interacting with the original poster of the tweet.

Posting individually to both accounts is the best approach but more work. On Android, there is an app called Twidere that supports both Mastodon and Twitter.

Using the status quo against the status quo is pragmatism ???

I think we should make sure that many people should know about it and after its existence is known to a large crowd even then if it doesn’t get more posts then we should try and provide new features which aren’t available in existing centralized networks. To make it widespread we should make sure that every college GLUG should conduct a session or a meet on how important it is to use Decentralized networks and how it protects our privacy. If told in right way a good number of college students may start using decentralized platforms.

Those are some nice suggestions :+1: especially the part about college GLUG’S taking initiative to make sessions on decentralised networks.
